Which friends can actually share a match?

Key point: PC players remain outside console matches, even when using a controller.

The frustrating discovery is not that a friend owns a different console. It is that one member of the group is on PC. Riot permits PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players to play together, but keeps them separate from PC matchmaking. A controller connected to a PC does not turn that installation into the console version.

Key point: Maya and Ben can share a console match; Alex needs a supported alternative.

For a concrete example, imagine Maya on PS5, Ben on Xbox Series S and Alex on a Windows PC. Maya and Ben have a supported platform combination, subject to region, account and cross-play settings. Alex cannot join their VALORANT match from PC. All three need a supported common setup or a different game; relinking their accounts does not remove that boundary.

PS5 + Xbox Series X|SConsole cross-play, with regional and account requirements.
PC + PS5 or Xbox Series X|SNo shared VALORANT matchmaking.

Check the region and the two Xbox switches

Key point: Check account regions and supported availability before the group installs.

Riot’s Console Access Guide lists VALORANT console availability in NA, EU, JP and BR. It also says cross-play requires players to be in the same region. A valid download guide for another market does not establish access for your own account. Check the actual account region before anyone spends the evening installing.

Key point: Xbox cross-play depends on both game and platform settings.

For Xbox, Riot identifies both an in-game cross-play toggle and the Xbox platform cross-play setting. If the devices and regions already match, those settings are a more useful next check than repeatedly disconnecting accounts. Ask each friend for the exact device, region and failing step, without sharing passwords or recovery codes.

Check the account before changing connections

Key point: Link the account holding your progress and use official recovery when needed.

When adding a platform, identify the Riot account that already owns your progress and follow the official linking process. Do not create a second account and expect the two histories to merge later. If a connection is already attached elsewhere, use the publisher’s recovery guidance rather than unlinking repeatedly.

A useful question to bring to support

Key point: Describe the devices, regions and failing step when asking for support.

“Which devices are involved, what region are the accounts in, and at what step does it fail?” is more useful than “cross-play is broken.” Record whether the problem is account access, adding a friend or joining a supported session. Our general cross-play guide explains the vocabulary; this game-specific page gives the more restrictive VALORANT case.
